Ges Laker
I was born in Ashford, Kent in October 1955 which makes me a " man of Kent" being south of the Medway. I attended Kennington Primary and the Towers Secondary Schools probably not paying as much attention as I should ! My dad had always regaled me with stories of his time in the Royal Navy (during the war !!) so at the tender age of 15 I left home and my 2 brothers to join up at HMS Ganges, Shotley Gate which is a few miles south of Ipswich. Anytime wasted at school was soon put right as naval discipline kicked me into shape.
Over the next 20 years I travelled the world as an Upper deck Technician initially and then a Physical Training Instructor on ships such as Phoebe, Bacchante, Tartar, Antelope and Boxer to name a few. The highlight of my naval career was the years I spent with the Fleet Air Arm Field Gun Crew.
I left the Navy in 1991 to start my own landscaping business and now spend most of my time either working or being involved with my local rugby club, Locks Heath Pumas. I have been dreaming of this walk for over 10 years and now is the time for me to give something back.
Phoebe
I was born in August 2002 in a beautiful little village called Ashurst in the New Forest. My name comes from the first ship Ges served on.
I am really looking forward to raising as much money for St Dunstans as possible and disproving the misconception that I am lazy. I actually love walking but enjoy the amazing views so like to take my time.
I have 20 children however only one still lives with me. Sumo will be playing a major role on our walk ensuring that spirits are always high with his boundless energy.
Sumo
No sure really what to say. I can't wait to go on the walk with Ges and my mum. I's 2 years old and this is possibly the most exciting thing I will have ever done.
I am told I am called Sumo because I was the fattest puppy in the second litter my mum had. Obviously this was only puppy fat and I have been working hard to impress the ladies with my lean torso.
